Saint John's is a Benedictine monastery of Catholic men called by Christ to support each other in the search for God through prayer, work and a common life lived under the Rule of Saint Benedict.
Five monks who left Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on 5 April 1856 for Minnesota founded the abbey. For 150 years the monks have served in schools, parishes, chaplaincies and education.
Our life together encourages learning, creativity in the arts and trades, and care for God's creation.
Creativity is expressed in crafts and construction, writing and publishing. The monks steward ca. 2,000 acres of forest, lakes and woodland.
We serve the Church and the wider community through our prayer and work in education, pastoral ministry, the missions, publishing, and in hospitality to people of all faiths.
We welcome students, guests, visitors and retreatants.
